Formula 1 Spread Betting Preview at SportingIndex

Formula 1 Spread Betting Preview at SportingIndex

With the start of the new season upon us, SportingIndex is already reporting good business on a number of their Formula 1 spread betting markets. With new line-ups, plenty of rule changes and even a new team, this season is being touted as a more exciting and unpredictable campaign than '04. With a potentially lucrative time in store for the smarter punter, we asked Sporting's Senior Formula 1 Trader for his take on the new rules and what they could mean for the teams:

Trackside

"Engines must now be used for two weekends, as opposed to just one in '04. This will obviously favour teams with greater reliability, which inevitably means that the bigger teams should benefit most. Traction and launch control are now banned. This should affect Renault significantly because last year they consistently used launch control to 'jump' places on the starting grid.

"One set of tires must now be used for qualifying sessions, all reconnaissance laps and the entire race. This is probably the most significant change for '05 because it means that one set of tires will need to last for the whole weekend. This will benefit drivers who strategically preserve their tires during a race – so expect Sato and Montoya to suffer!

"It's worth noting that after finishing in the bottom six teams last season, McLaren will be permitted to run a third car in the Friday testing sessions. This should give them a significant advantage over their rivals for the title, because it will allow them to generate a great deal more data from each circuit. The use of a third car in testing greatly benefited BAR last year and I expect to see McLaren's fortunes improve accordingly.

"With Ferrari's new car unavailable for the first three races, Raikkonen could be the man to beat. The new McLaren has looked very strong in testing and with last year's reliability problems supposedly behind them, expect both Kimi and Montoya to push Schumacher all the way. If you're looking to bet against a team this season, I would go for BAR. Sato's aggressive style won't suit the new harder tires and although Button should score some solid points finishes I can't see him ending up on the podium this season.

"Toyota could be the dark horse to back at a decent price. They have unveiled Mike Gascoigne's first car since moving from Renault and their extensive testing schedule has produced good results. In Trulli and Ralf they have two decent drivers capable of finishing in the points regularly, so I would be tempted to bet 'high' on their season points.”

Formula 1 Promotion*

Buy (bet 'high' on) any driver in SportingIndex's main Race Index before a race starts and if he fails to complete the first lap of the race, they'll refund your losses!

To qualify all bets must be placed before the race starts. If a driver changes to the spare car after a race is stopped in the first lap, then the original bet stands and no refunds will be made.
